![]() Double Whirlwind
(Gossard, Dianna) 2010 introduction
(JOHN KIRKLAND x CARDIGAN BAY ) x TETRA DOUBLE POMPON
TET 38" Midseason Dormant emo very fragrant 5.5" 4-5 way branching 22-30 buds. Rebloomer Fertile both ways.
Double Whirlwind has creamy-rose pink double flowers with darker red eyezone. Both petals and sepals can have a darker pink edge and small gold edge. DOUBLE WHIRLWIND's form is more full than its sib DOUBLE EXPLOSION. Has been our parent of choice when utilizing the TETRA DOUBLE POMPON genes to go more round. Four different tetraploid conversions in this great double. It is just waiting to be out crossed. Because of its great branching, dormancy and plant habit, DOUBLE WHIRLWIND is an outstanding garden daylily.
Part of our pursuit in hybridizing doubles is to make them more Northern hardy, there are only a few tetraploid doubles being produced today which are dormant. DOUBLE WHIRLWIND brings the genes of TETRA DOUBLE POMPON, a dormant Miles introduction to the tetraploid level. The pod parents also bring unique genes to the tetraploid level. The pod parent, a Kirchhoff introduction, JOHN KIRKLAND , an evergreen, from cross of a ((PAPPY'S GIRL x sdlg ) x (sdlg x TETRA SILOAM DOUBLE CLASSIC )) has unique converted genes in it . The other daylily in the pod parent cross is Trimmers CARDIGAN BAY, a cross of (TETRA EXOTIC ECHO x TETRA YAZOO SOUFFLE). Only the Grandparents, EXOTIC ECHO , and SILOAM DOUBLE CLASSIC are listed as dormants. Our cross of (JOHN KIRKLAND x CARDIGAN BAY ) was evergreen, it was never introduced, but contained the dormant genes from TETRA EXOTIC ECHO , and TETRA SILOAM DOUBLE CLASSIC. With the power of the induced TETRA DOUBLE POMPON as a pollen parent , the dormant DOUBLE WHIRLWIND was produced. Because of the environmental selection process, being we live in the great white north, we select mainly for dormants. They are what performs best in our zone 5 garden. As you can see if you hybridize in the north, DOUBLE WHIRLWIND can be an important parent because of its dormancy. If crossed back with a dormant double, offspring will show a very high amount of dormancy in its children. It is no wonder why the kids from DOUBLE WHIRLWIND were so good in the seedling patch........$100
